"I had a great time at the Beginner Crochet Class. Amy's teaching was clear and easy to follow, and by the end of the class I was confident to replicate / keep practising the coaster at home. It was a fun afternoon with a great bunch of ladies. Now ready to try the Flirty Florence bag! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In just two hours, you'll learn the basic crochet stitches and start making a raffia coaster. Some people finish during the workshop, while others take it home to complete with the included pattern and video tutorials. Either way, you'll leave with the confidence to keep crocheting at home.

All materials are provided, along with step-by-step guidance throughout the class. Just bring yourself and enjoy the process.

Classes are held at Genki Arts and Crafts Cafe, 382 Tamborine - Oxenford Road Upper Coomera, QLD 4209.

Suitable for adults and teens aged 16+.

Who this class is for

This crochet workshop on the Gold Coast is perfect for:

  • Complete beginners who have never picked up a crochet hook before
  • Anyone wanting to try a creative hobby in a supportive, social setting
  • Gold Coast locals looking for unique craft classes or weekend activities
  • Friends, mums, daughters or workmates planning a creative afternoon out
  • People who love handmade style and want to learn a practical new skill
  • Anyone craving a mindful break from screens, stress or busy schedules

No prior experience is needed. You’ll be guided step by step and leave with the confidence to keep crocheting at home.

What you'll learn

In this 2-hour class, you'll learn the core crochet skills every beginner needs:

  • How to hold your crochet hook
  • How to hold your yarn
  • How to make a slip knot
  • How to start your project with a foundation chain
  • How to work the double crochet stitch

By the end of the session, you’ll have started your very first crochet project: a cute-as coaster. Woo-hoo!

Our project: Crochet Coaster

We'll be making a crochet coaster using raffia yarn.

Raffia might sound unusual, but it’s actually:

  • Soft to work with
  • Structured (so your project will hold its shape)
  • Perfect for learning stitches
  • Doesn't split (like many yarns) so is easier to stitch with

Plus, it makes a coaster that looks so good on your table you won't want to add a drink (lol).

What's included

Everything you need is provided - just show up. Easy peasy, hooray!

Your class includes:

  • All materials
  • Crochet hook and raffia yarn
  • Step-by-step instruction from Amy
  • Printed pattern to take home
  • QR code access to video tutorials so you can finish your coaster at home, or keep practising after the class

FAQs

Do I need any crochet experience?

Not at all. This class is designed for absolute beginners. We’ll start right at the beginning and go step by step, so no prior experience is needed.

What if I’ve tried crochet before but couldn’t get the hang of it?

You’re very welcome. Lots of people come to class after trying to learn online and getting stuck. Being shown in person often makes everything click.

Will I finish my coaster in the class?

Some people finish their coaster during the class, others take it home to complete. If yours isn’t quite done, you’ll have the pattern and video tutorials to help you finish it at home.

Will you run more classes?

Yes, more beginner classes will be added regularly. Once you’ve learned the basics, you’ll also be able to join future Nana Sport crochet sessions.

I’m coming alone - is that ok?

Absolutely! Many people come solo and it’s a really friendly, relaxed environment. Crochet tends to get people chatting very quickly.

Is there a minimum number of people for the class to go ahead?

Yes - we need at least 4 people booked in for a class to run. If a class hasn't reached that number by 3 days before, we'll be in touch to offer a reschedule to the next available date or a full refund - whichever suits you best.

What if I need to cancel?

We understand - life gets busy sometimes.

More than 7 days before the class
You can cancel for a full refund.

Within 7 days of the class
You’ll receive 100% Nana Sport credit to use towards another class.

Within 48 hours of the class
At this stage your seat and materials have already been prepared, so we’re unable to offer refunds or credits.

If you can’t make it, you’re welcome to send a friend in your place - just let us know beforehand.

Amy’s class was organised, informative and fun! It was also a bit frustrating as I had never crocheted before…. but, I left feeling very accomplished, and inspired to practiced when I got home. Her video tutorials are fantastic to follow! Coaster done ✅ next step is the bag!

I thoroughly enjoyed the NanaSport Crochet Workshop. Amy, was a calm and thoughtful tutor who guided our enthusiastic group through the steps to make a complete coaster. The venue was warm and friendly, the seats were comfy and as promised we enjoyed a glass of wine and a cheese board.

For me, the workshop was good value!

At a comfortable pace I learned how to hold the raffia yarn and how to hold the hook, plus I learned the chain stitch and the double crochet stitch and how to neatly finish off the edges.

We were taken through the process of making a complete crochet coaster which gave me a comfortable sense of achievement.

The next day I was so encouraged by the workshop that I decided to make the same thing again with 4 ply wool helped by the written pattern that was included in the workshop, along with access to how-to videos.

I'm well on my way to knowing how to crochet, thank you Amy, thank you Nana sport.

Never picked up a crochet hook before. Frustrating at first but after the first 3-4 rows away you go !!
Once you see the pattern emerge it’s easier to understand your stitch placement. Great fun, looking forward to a lot of practice at home.
Thanks Amy
